The Roots - "Undun" - Def Jam :: Comments
Had no idea this was even coming, their 4th!!! album in roughly a year and a half...
Me either! I haven't paid much attention to their past few albums have they been pretty consistent in quality?
I would say no to consistent but I actually can't say for sure. They've been sort of swinging between 'underground' and 'pop' to put it simply, starting with The Tipping Point. TTP sort of went 'too far' and was inconsistent, it had good tracks but some of it was terrible. With Game Theory they went back to a more gritty sound, but I've never been able to get myself to really listen to, even though Larry Gold was on tons of tracks [which should provide an 'interesting' factor]...
I think Rising Down was on the same 'underground' page, but I've heard even less of it than I've heard of Game Theory, I never bought it either, maybe I should and I can finally bring myself to listen to it properly...
IIRC How I Got Over [the last 'solo' one] was somewhere between Phrenology & The Tipping Point in that it had some quality tracks and also had some radio-friendly tracks but it wasn't exactly Phrenology 2 either [which had plenty of radio-ready tracks, Complexity & Pussy Galore for instance would've made perfect singles, hardly The Seed 2.0 but 'catchy' enough for a more general public by their standard]. ?uestlove pretty much produced HIGO [strangely on Game Theory most songs are credited to prod by The Roots, with 1 of them saying The Roots, Ahmir Thompson blablabla...] like on this album, I love him, so...I dunno, I 'should' like this...
The John Legend album was fucking great, great choice of songs, the Betty wright one felt a little lacklustre to me, but more so on Betty's part than theirs. It was a bit same-ish, though...
I dunno, for me, I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to ever match Things Fall Apart / Phrenology, not only were they instant classics in general that will stand the test of time, they're both very close to me and released at just the right time [at my age, in my life], so I basically always let them off the hook and still buy their albums even if I'm not really interested haha

OMG I TOTALLY agree with you about Phrenology and Things Fall Apart they also remind me of the time totally maybe that's down to the music being so good though I have that with quite a few 'godly' albums and not so much with others so maybe it is the quality of music that gives you memories etc too but yeah I don't think they'll EVER match those albums again..stuff like the Kweli, Nelly and Jill collabos were perfection. [although I wish we heard a Nelly without Black Thought chorus version of Sacrifice he really drowns her out] I'm gonna check out Rising Down on my Spotify app on iPhone though [you get pretty much everyone's albums on there streaming for free so I've been doing pretty well keeping up haha] for one it has some awesome guests [Chrisette Michele for one]
Oh yeah totally forgot about Chrisette Michele being on there...it's the same for Common BTW, his first albums were decent enough like The Roots' with a few standout tracks but then he had Like Water For Chocolate & Electric Circus out roughly around the same time as Things Fall Apart & Phrenology and you already know he's never ever gonna improve on that, even with the next album being No ID entirely I would be lying if I said my hopes were very high, I thought Sweet was really odd for instance, the beat / vocals...
Yep they're my favourite of Common's too guess most people like them the best too then haha Yeah well Makeba said she's meant to be on a few tracks and I loved her chorus on the single so at least we have that & hopefully James to look forward to too
Yeah she's part of the whole Cocaine 80s movement I'm guessing that's how she got involved along with the RocNation connection.. she's on vocals on the single 'Blue Sky' and she said she's on the album too hope we get James as well just to be greedy
Wow I hadn't listened to it, figured I'd wait for the album but gave Sweet a try...that's dope, I'm much more interested now...
Yep even one from each of them would be amazing and now we know Ester has worked with No ID too [hopefully not exclusively for RiRi] maybe we'll even get her on one too
*pisses
Well wiki says just Makeba on Blue Sky but before according to the tracklisting there weren't any collabos on the album other than Nas & John Legend so who knows...it should leak within a few days...either way awesome that both Makeba & James worked with Common on 'proper' tracks...
Yeah well I'm surprised they credited her on the blog posts TBH being that she's 'unknown' so I'm sure/I hope we'll get uncredited vocals and obv writing if nothing else on the rest of the album
And just looked on wiki the credits look totally incomplete so fingers crossed the full ones are amazing

Just cummed a little, guessing Blue Sky is prob James as well :
DX: Whether it's Kanye West and Jay-Z this year with Watch The Throne, or what you and Q-Tip have spoken about, or what you and Nas are toying with, as somebody who's been in the game for 20 years, do you see that Jazz-spirited era of collaboration coming forward, where we'll see stars working on full projects together?
Common: I think it's a great addition to Hip Hop, for artists to be able to collaborate and do albums. I think it gives the audience a nice change of somethin' new, a new experience. For the artist, it has to be inspiring. For me, it's inspiring. I love to be able to collaborate too. That's one of the greatest things about working on this album was No I.D. and myself, we'd build on the songs! He'd make a beat and I'd be like, "What if I did this?" or "What if you added this to it?" We'd build, and then have James Fauntleroy, who sings on a lot of the songs, and Makeba [Riddick] come and add what they wanted to add. It just made it more of a collective of creativity. That always adds to making great art, 'cause you're not just held to your perspective. You're getting all these other talents bein' able to add on.

Oh and this was published 3 days ago...so we know it's not some super-early version of the album with songs that ended up on the Cocaine 80s EPs or something that he's talking about...I might have to eat my words yet and I gladly will...
Fucking awesome! OMFG my excitement for it just jumped up like 100000x!
My hopes were really low on James being on there, I was disappointed that he ditched Cee-Lo again and nothing that implied a lot of tracks with vocal hooks but yeah this is looking really horny...
